Hens
Ever hear the phrase "mother hen"? It describes an overly protective mom. That's for good reason. Chickens are loving, doting, adoring and fiercely protective of their chicks.
Roosters
A rooster ensures the safety of his flock. He will call to the hens when there is danger. Chickens have different calls for an aerial predator versus a ground predator. A rooster will notify his flock when there is food available, and even toss it up into the air so they can see where it is.
Chicks
Who doesn't love baby chicks? Especially their mom! Chicks are practically inseparable from their mother, including sleeping beneath her protective wings. Chicks are taught by their mom how to drink water and how to forage. Hens have a specific cluck for attracting their chicks attention. Mom will pick up and drop bits of food to get her chicks to eat.
