BROILERS
Chickens that are raised for meat (called broilers) are selectively bred to grow large pectoral muscles which are used for white meat. This selective abnormality gives rise to painful muscle disease. They are bred to grow rapidly to optimize production and maximize profit. Factory-farmed chickens have no access to the outdoors, being confined to crowded sheds for their entire lives.
HOW BAD IS IT?
Almost 70 billion chickens are killed for food annually, close to 10 billion in the United States alone.
THE LIFE OF A "BROILER"
The animals are subjected to extreme confinement, unsanitary conditions, surgical procedures performed without anesthetic, denial of the ability to do natural activities for their species and a cruel, painful kill process.
Chickens are considered to be among the most abused animals on the planet.
